Get Fleet Rates When Buying Diesel
“Hey, fuel is 10 cents cheaper across the street, let’s go over there?!?” said Marc never! We pick gas stations based safety first, reputation of the brand second, and ease of getting in and out third.
Yet, with diesel fuel cards, we’re not talking about cents, we’re talking dollars and for RVers, it can add up to hundreds of dollars in savings in no time at all.
TSD Open Roads: Fuel Program Application
We love visiting truck stops for the following reasons:
- Safety! Period. I’ll gladly pay more without risking damage to the RV
- Significant fuel savings through the TSD Fuel Program
- The pump doesn’t shut off at $100
- High-flow pumps save time
- Its easier to clean the windshield with long poles and clean fluid
- Great customer service with clean facilities
- Do I need to mention the CAT scale??
If you own a diesel truck or RV, there are significant savings to be had through a fuel savings card. You can get fuel from most truck stops at fleet prices. We’ve been using the TSD Fuel card for a couple years now and we’ve seen big savings.
If savings is your number priority, just download the app to find out where the biggest savings are.
Some people have written in saying that the fuel card stops just hike up their prices to offset the savings. Not exactly. Truckers pay an over-the-road fuel tax. At most truck stops, you’ll notice fuel on the “car side” is cheaper than the truck lanes.
Keep in mind, one incident or damage to your RV trying to negotiate tight quarters will cost you your fuel savings for the next year! Plus, in most cases, the savings of fuel card offsets the higher price.

Let’s talk about fuel lane etiquette. Most RVers are out having fun while truckers are making a living on the road. We can all help the reputation of RVers using truck fuel lanes by being ready to pump, not wasting time and pulling forward to the yellow line when finished.

Love your videos – very entertaining, down to earth, but yet professionally done.
We are retiring in a year and looking forward to hitting the road 1\2 time 🙂

Hi KYD! We have used the TSD savings card for a while now and love the savings. We will check into the other program that you mentioned. Thanks for all you do for the RV community! We are on our way home (Colorado) from spending 2 wonderful months in Maine! Question for you? When you use the TSD card, let’s say at TA, I assume you use the truck lanes. Can you use the TSD card in the car diesel lanes? We have a friend that has a Class B diesel and the truck lanes gas nozzle is too big for his RV. Does your truck have a modified gas receiver for the nozzle? Thanks so much and enjoy the rest of your summer. Stay safe!
Steven N. says
To use the TSD Card you must use the trucker lanes. I don’t believe the TSD card works at the auto lanes, either that or you don’t get the discount. Check their website, I think it tells you. As for the nozzle, thankfully Ford Heavy Duty trucks have the enlarged fuel fill. They do make an adapter that your friend can purchase so that they can fill their Class B. Since it is a reducer they will have to be very careful so that they don’t get a fuel shower because the pressure at full can make a mess. Hope this helps
PinkPuffyShoes says
We have a Ford and had the smaller nozzle. We ended up replacing it with a larger one so we could use any diesel pump. It took my husband about 5 minutes to swap them out.

We are in the process of buying a new Forest River Sierra C-Class 2990TRIK fifth wheel 2021, 32″10″. We will be picking it up at the dealer after it is built. They said it will be Oct. 5th to the 15th 2020. We are driving from Reno, NV to Trenton, OH after they notify us. My Question is “is there a checklist I can follow to check out our new camper when the dealer gives us our introduction tour.”?
We have been camping for over 45 years. So we’re not new to camping. Our last camper was a 30′ F.R. Sierra. We camp a few times a year. Two months on the road to stay at Federal Parks, BLM, or free camping. You have Free Camping list and other Money Saving things. Can you send me these and other traveling hints. Love your videos.

I have the TSD card too and love it. I also use the Pilot/Flying J app with a standard credit card added and fuel at the truck island with no extra costs and with the 5-cent discount.
DIANE says
I was curious how you were able to use a credit card since the TSD website says it gets drafted out of your bank account.
Michelle Scott says
I was wondering too! That would be extra great.

I just saw your fuel saving suggestions. However there have been locations where I have seen diesel .20c to .50c less expensive than the posted truck stop prices. Do your programs make up for that?
JackWagon says
Yes the TSD and the new service they listed make up for the difference in price you are seeing and are also normally even less than the lower prices you are comparing to. I use TSD and it is a huge savings at most of their partner locations. This new service will be a huge saving for me where I live as they are a big discount with Kwik Trip which TSD is only about 10cents/gal less.

Thanks for sharing. Another app I have found useful for finding discounts on diesel fuel prices is GetUpside. No sign up costs or having to link a card or account, simply taking picture of receipt and uploading to app and tons of stations are listed. You see the discount price similar to gas buddy. Worth checking out.
Don Phrump says
I just went through GetUpside’s Terms of Service. Are you aware they supply your personal and financial information to Dwolla, Inc., a company which has been fined by the Consumer Protection Agency for poor security? Did you actually read the terms of service before you signed up? Were you aware your information is being sold to a third party? While GetUpside sound good, I’m not sure it’s a good play.
Chris Hogan says
Using the savings card do you worry about the Cetane levels of the fuel or just put an additive in your fuel to keep it up at the correct levels?
Justin Voigts says
Should you get both cards? Are some discounts better with the TSD card and some better with My Diesel Savings Program? If so can you tell which card to use where before filling up? Thanks!
Rich Ridenour says
Following…this is the question I have since I have the TSD already
Rohn says
I have both the TSD & My Diesel programs. Yes it varies which one has the best discount. Usually My Diesel has the best, but not always, I’ve also found that sometimes one or the other will have a discount available in an area where the other doesn’t, so it has been helpful having both.

I love your informative videos. It has certainly help me plan for my retirement in a few years. My husband and I will RV half of the time. I recently applied for the new Gas Buddy savings card. That also is attached to your checking account. The website says we can save at average of 25 cents per gallon at most gas stations. I will add the TSD card when we purchase a diesel truck.
Skip McCreery says
I have learned so much from you guys. My wife and I love camping. I had a 27’bumper pull that I pulled with my 2008 Toyota Tundra 5.0. Did ok but we didn’t ever go too far because it really drank fuel pulling the trailer, always running about 3000RPMs. Just bought a 2020 Ford F350. Never got over 1600RPMs.
Just sold that trailer and in the market for a 5thwheel. Looking hard at the Montana. Anyway, long story just to say thank you for the great videos and blogs.

Thanks for much for the tip on the My Diesel Savings card! We knew about the TSD card and have used it many times since we started full time back in June. So far we have made 11 fills using this card and saved $440, with our single biggest savings being over $65! We were a little disappointed when we got to Florida that the number of options for the TSD card seemed limited so having the other card will definitely give us more options, especially since diesel fuel is so much more expensive here than it has been in other places. And yes, fueling in the truck lanes is so much quicker and easier. So far, we have not had any problems with using these lanes but we do make sure we get in and out as quickly as possible. Another great KDY tip!!!
Jennifer Schroeder says
Ugh! KYD! 🙂
Popa Wats says
So what card are you using in Florida?
Natalie says
Any updates on the differences between the two programs now that you have been able to use it for a bit? I wonder if it is wise just to have a few options? Thank you for all the work you do to provide great tips to other RVers.
Timothy Bockhoff says
I just signed up for the card. Will definitely be nice not having to walk inside and give them a estimate on how much fuel you want. Just swipe it and go.
Steve R says
The referral link returns a 404 not found error. I’d love to get you some referral rewards as I’m planning on signing up for an account ASAP, can you fix the link or send it to me directly?
Amelia says
To use the truck lanes do you have to have your rig hooked up? What if you need fuel without the rig attached do they make you use the auto lanes?
JAM says
No
Andreas Tsircou says
Is there any programs like this for us Gas burners? I currently look for Safeways (for the points) and Costco, as I have a Costco CC and we get the 5% cash back at the end of the year.
Bill says
We also use gas and like Andreas are wondering where to get discounts. We also use Safeway and Costco.
JAM says
Gasbuddy

I just applied for the TSD card but we have been using Mudflaps which has been very good to us. They are adding more stations every day and you can link it to a credit card. I love using the app on my phone. You just walk into the gas station and show them the code they give you. They put it into their system and when they have it ready, you fill up. The pump shows the regular price and so does the receipt if you ask for one which I generally do. You are actually charged through the app only at the price that you saw in the app. Usually I have the receipt on my phone in the MudFlaps app within a couple of hours. Never an issue. Totally recommend and thanks to the trucker who came over at the pumps and gave us the brochure. We will forever appreciate that guy. As a side note, you can earn free fuel on referrals and I took a survey for them once and they deposited $20 into my app account to use on fuel.
Jim Looney says
I just used it for the first time this weekend and saved $14. Sweet! We leave in 2 days for 4700 miles from NC->WY and back. I’m looking forward to saving as much as we can

It’s great stumbling upon articles that generously share such information. I’ve learned that some apps even offer discounts without you having to pay for any membership fee. Such apps are earning nonetheless, through ads. Definitely worth checking.
Lynd Cason says
Following the link you mentioned in the video to get here, looking for the comparison that you mentioned between the TSD card and the Innovatiive Logistics card. I’m not finding anything on here regarding the Innovative card. Have you withdrawn your recommendation for that card? I was expecting to find a pro/con discussion for both cards.
Marc says
I only use the TSD card now. I prefer that card. It was too confusing to have two recommendations.
George says
Yikes! Any concerns with having to provide your SSN? Not sure why that would be needed.
George Brooks says
Good afternoon fellow travelers. We received an email from Open Roads/TSD in late December 2022 that they are no longer allowing transactions at Pilot, Flying J and One9 locations. Wondering if many have seen an impact upon the ability to get discount fuel during their travels? For us, we used Pilot and Flying J stations quite a bit, so might add another challenge to navigate to other locations for fuel. Or, do others have alternatives that they might suggest – are their other programs that provide these same benefits? Appreciate your comments – Regards – George and Joy Brooks

I like that you talked about finding if you will center with a savings card that we can use if we have a diesel truck or RV. This piece of information is perfect for us because we plan on getting an RV to use for the summer and in the future. So it would be great if we are aware of programs that can offer discounts and save us money in the long run to enjoy the trips that we are going to have as a family.
